Fly to the Line Competition with the Royal Air Force

    Regional Finals

    Linton-on-Ouse

    North Yorkshire

    Monday 4th June 2018

On Monday 4th June, some children from year 4 and 5 were lucky enough to visit an RAF base at Linton-on-Ouse, near York. Whilst we were there, we took part in the Regional Finals against children from other schools from around the north of England.

The children were able to have a look around the hanger at the base and speak to some of the pilots from the Royal Air Force. They spoke to us about the aeroplanes that they train to fly in, and we even sat in the cockpit!

After, we designed and made our planes for the next round of the competition. We decorated them with the famous RAF roundel.

The children did an amazing job at designing and making the planes and we finished this stage of the competition in second and first place!

We are really looking forward to the next stage, the National Final at RAF Cosford in Wolverhampton on the 27th June!

Take a look at the flyer that organisers have issued for next year’s competition.

  • Gold for Stoneyholme

Wed 06 Jun 2018 Mr Ariss

The school has been awarded the Gold Award for Learning Outside the Classroom from the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom.

This award shows our commitment as a school to providing a relevant and inspirational curriculum that uses the school grounds, venues (both locally and nationally) and visitors to develop and enhance the learning within school.

It is a great honour to receive this accreditation that celebrates our success.  We are now one of only 33 schools within the United Kingdom and one of only 5 within the North West to hold this award.

The award was given after an inspection performed by Mr Frank Edwards from the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom on the 22nd May.  In his report, Mr Edwards commented that:

The school has a full commitment to LOtC and want the children to engage with and experience first-hand the environment around them.

The Headteacher, Mr Ariss and the staff and pupils I met with demonstrated their enthusiasm for LOtC with passion. The school has invested in new buildings, development of school grounds and staff CPD to deliver effective LOtC - as it sees LOtC as a valuable means to enable all children reach their potential. The school is also committed to engaging and cementing good relationships with the local community and beyond; not only has pupil achievement and attainment markedly increased, so has parent involvement.

This is a great achievement and I would like to thank not only the pupils and staff at school in working tirelessly but also the continued support from all our families at Stoneyholme Community Primary School.
