She looked at her plan to help her write.
In the centre, among the wild cherry hazel and horse chestnut trees, there were three boys about his own age or older. Barney recognised them. They were the Snarget boys and they were known for always causing trouble in the area. They seemed to have built a small fire which was crackling and flickering in the dim light of the copse.
Barney found a large horse chestnut tree and climbed up to a place where he would not be seen by the Snargets. He picked himself a few conkers from the tree and hurled them towards the large pile of kindling. They struck the pile in the centre. The kindling scattered like birds hearing a gunshot all over the three Snarget boys.
They all screeched like a cat and covered their heads.
“ ’Ere, ’oo’s chuckin’ conkers at us?” yelled the first Snarget boy suspiciously.
Scowling, all the boys began to look round the copse.
“All right, it’s no use ‘iding. We can see yer,” called the smallest Snarget.
“Come out from the trees or we’ll beat ya to a pulp!” shouted another.
Although the boys were stronger than Barney, he knew that by the time they worked out which tree he was in, he would be well away. He giggled and tossed another conker at the boys. Getting fed up of the attack, the Snarget boys gathered around the fire. After a while, Barney heard a lot of whispering going on as the fire continued to crackle. Soon after, all three Snarget boys moved away from the fire and started walking towards the way out.
The eldest called over his shoulder in a casual voice, “Goodbye Barney. We’re goin’ ‘ome now. Just keep your ’ands off our delicious marshmallows. We’ll toast ‘em tomorrow. ”
