Spring 1

Our key question for this term will be:

Should I do the right thing even when others don’t?

This will be discussed through stories and a range of activities that explain about consequences, forgiveness and characteristics such as bravery.

In PSED we will be learning how to keep ourselves safe near roads. We will be looking at different cultures and beliefs showing respect to others. Through our key text we will be looking at what makes a good leader and exploring others feelings.

When learning about being a leader, we discussed the concept of power and the British Value democracy

As mathematicians we will know how to orally count to 20 and count backwards from 10 to 0. We will read all the numerals to 20, represent these numbers using fingers, objects, Numicon and 10 frames and match these sets to the correct numeral. We will know how to form the numerals 1-10 correctly and be able to subitise to 10. We will learn the composition of numbers to 5 by looking at which numbers we have to add together to get a given total. We will continue to use ‘part, part, whole’ as a method of exploring addition and subtraction to 10. We will be learning the patterns made by doubles.

We will know one more and one less using sets of objects.

We will use the vocabulary of ‘edge’, ‘face’ and ‘vertex’ to describe the 3d shapes and look at different ways to construct and deconstruct these shapes to make new shapes. We will compare and sequence objects by weight and use non standard units to measure objects by weight.

Exploring composition of teen number (10 plus)

Exploring money and making amounts using 1p’s

During our Literacy, we will be learning the story of the Queen’s hat. We will practise the story with actions to help us learn it by heart.
Then we will change some of the sentences to create our own innovated sentences including using the past tense.
We will use technology to publish our work learning how to speak clearly.

We will learn about instructions and shopping lists when we make our Chinese stir fry and enjoying special stories linked to our RE work. We will also be learning how to answer ‘how?’ and ‘why’ questions about the stories we have listened to. We will be orally recounting our trip to the supermarket to buy our ingredients.

We will use our phonics to help us with our writing. In handwriting we will learn how to form our first set of letters i, l, t, x and z

We are practising forming our letters correctly

We’ve been using a story map to retell the Queen’s Hat story

We have been using phonics to write sentences

During our RE, we will be learning about special times for different people when we will be finding out how

people celebrate the Chinese New Year. We will be

visiting the local supermarket to buy ingredients to

make some Chinese celebration food.

We will link this to our whole school concept of community and talk about the different communities we belong to and how we show we belong.

We will be listening to stories from special books linked to different religions.

Exploring Chinese artefacts

As artists we will be exploring tone by adding white to different colours. We will use this as a basis for a piece of work including the use of printing skills to add buildings and windows to create a cityscape.

Printing a silhouette cityscape into the sunset scene

We have been painting pictures of famous figures from the past and present.

Painting Chinese dragons

As storytellers we will be retelling familiar stories, such

as the Queens hat and stories related to the Chinese New Year using props to help us.

We used props to retell the story.

During music we will continue to learn to sing some more nursery rhymes. We will listen to a variety of musical styles and respond through movement and sound. As a musician we will explore the names and sounds of percussion instruments and practise keeping the beat and copying a rhythm. We will be learning about pitch and how to make high and low sounds.

In P.E, we will be using minibeasts as a theme to develop our skills of jumping, travelling and rolling.
With equipment, we will increase the control we have of

an object when catching it.

When learning about the world we will be exploring Winter. We will be scientists learning about freezing and melting and how materials change states.

We have been exploring the snow. How does hot water and the sun change the snow?

Have you ever noticed what happens to your breath when it’s cold?

What do you think will happen to these objects if we leave them out all night?

As historians we will be looking at the past and present including the Queen as a significant person from the past. We will be looking at pictures of Burnley and London now and in the past to look at what has changed.

The Queen has lost her hat! As engineers we will visit the STEAM hub to evaluate hats, design and make her a new one. We will look at different designs and processes to help us make different hats.

First we tried on and evaluated different types of hats

We went to the STEAM hub to design and create a new hat for the Queen

Using our engineering skills and combining materials in the continuous provision

As geographers we will be representing journeys made

by characters from familiar stories through journey maps. We will be comparing different places such as Burnley, London and China. We will recognise different features from out local town.

We will be going on a bus tour of Burnley visiting some significant places ending up at the Singing Ringing Tree.

During ICT we will be using IPads to take photographs. We will use the Chatterpix app and green screen technology to publish our Queens hat story.
