Writing

Warm up

This week we are going to be looking at relative clauses with an omitted (taken out) pronoun.

Read the sentences below. The first sentence includes a relative pronoun. The second sentence has been written without a relative pronoun.

Today we are going to be using our background knowledge to understand the front cover and blurb of Alice in Wonderland.

We are going to relate the book to other books we have read, our own experiences and world experiences.

Step 1

Look at the slide below to remind you of how we use the reading strategy of background knowledge. This slide will help you understand what 3 elements of background knowledge we are going to be discussing today.

Step 2

Look at the model below carefully. As you can see I have used the book cover and blurb of the book Awful Auntie as an example.

Firstly, just by looking at the front cover and the blurb, I related my book to self to my own Auntie.

Then, just by looking at the front cover and the blurb, I related my book to world to something I see everyday in the world.

Finally, just by looking at the front cover and the blurb, I related my book to book to Harry Potter because of the Owl on the cover.

Task

Using your background knowledge, you are going to think of 2 for each of the sub headings:

Book to self

Book to world

Book to book

Just like the model above, you are going to complete the task.

How it should look in your book

Book to self

Book to world

Book to book

When you have finished, send a picture of your work to your teacher on SEESAW!
