LC: To be able to solve word problems involving division of money.

How can we work out how much Holly and Sam each pay?

Does the question say that they share the cost equally?

What are some ways the cost can be shared?

What kind of calculation do they need to perform to find the answer?

If they shared the cost equally, the total cost is divided by 2 so that we can find out how much 1 child needs to pay.

Cost of present is £16.20.

£16 divided by 2 is £8

20p divided by 2 is 10p

£8 and 10p make £8.10

What if Holly paid twice as much as Sam?

Would she have paid more or less than Sam?

If Holly pays 2x the amount and Sam pays 1x the amount, what would we divide by now?

2x the amount + 1x the amount = the amount being shared by 3.

Holly would pay for 2 parts of the amount and Sam would pay 1.

£16.20 is not easily divisible by three; therefore, we need to partition the money in a way that is easy to divide by 3.

£16.20 = £15 + £1.20.

£15 divided by 3 = £5

£1.20 = 120p

120p divided by 3 is 40p

£5 + 40p = £5.40

What if Holly paid four times as much as Sam?

Would she have paid more or less than Sam?

If Holly pays 4x the amount and Sam pays 1x the amount, what would we divide by now?

4x the amount + 1x the amount = the amount being shared by 5.

Holly would pay for 4 parts of the amount and Sam would pay 1.

Can you calculate this problem without help first?
