In Talking Maths this week, we are going to be looking at halving numbers up to 200.
If we are halving a number, what does that mean we are going to do to the number?
This means, we are dividing the number by 2.
When dividing any 2-digit number, we can partition the number into tens and units. We can then share them equally.
To half 26:
We find half of 20 = 10
Half of 6 = 3
10 + 3 = 13
If the number in the tens column is an odd number, we can use the nearest even ten to help us.
To half 32:
We find the nearest even ten below 30, which is 20.
Find half of 20 = 10
We then rename the extra 10 as 10 ones.
So, half of 12 = 6
10 + 6 = 16
Using this process, work out half of the following numbers.
46
84
52
78
36
