Summer 2

Our key concept questions for this half term will be:
Should you do the right thing even if others don't?

This links to the whole school concepts:

What does it mean to be a citizen?  Is power always a positive thing?

In PSED we will be revisiting 'The Colour Monster'. We will be naming our feelings, what causes these feelings and what we can do about them. We will be finding out who our new teacher will be when we move to Year 1 and we will spend some time with them exploring our new classroom and getting to know each other. Through our key text 'Supertato' we will be exploring right and wrong and our key concept of Power.

How to manage our emotions

The Evil Pea is causing trouble in the classroom

In Literacy we will be using the story 'Supertato' as a context for our reading and writing. We will know a simplified version of the story by heart and use this as a basis for our drama and green screen work. We will know how to write a description when we learn how to make a wanted poster to catch the 'Evil Pea'. We will use the phonics we know to help us write letters, cards and posters asking for help. As authors we will be changing parts of the 'Supertato' story to create our own. We will explore creating new characters and crimes committed.

We will be using the phonics we know to read and understand phonically decodable books.

We will use the phonics we know to write sentences that can be read by other people.

In handwriting we will learn how to form our next set of letters r, v, w, j, y, f and k.

As mathematicians we will know how to orally count to 100. We will read and write and order the numerals to 20. Now that we know our number bonds to 5 really well we will be making sure we know our number bonds to 10 just as well. We will be comparing quantities using the language  'same as', 'greater than' and 'less than'. We will continue with addition by identifying number bonds, counting in 2's and double facts to help us simplify calculations involving 3 or 4 digits. We will revisit subtraction facts of number bonds to 5 and know about ordinal numbers.

We will be moving on from comparing to using standard units to compare length, height and capacity. We will know how to follow and give instructions involving positional language.

Composition of numbers

As scientists we will build on our knowledge of freezing and melting by exploring the best ways to avoid our healthy, frozen lollipops from melting.

To ensure our lollipops are healthy we will know about different ways to keep healthy, including healthy foods.

We will complete our understanding of the seasons by adding Summer to our seasonal cycle.

The naughty Evil Pea travels to India and is going to send a video of him exploring different parts of India, the various transport and Indian patterns. As geographers we will be comparing environments and cultures.

As engineers we will be visiting the STEAM hub to take part in our STEMterpise week, which includes designing a product as well as evaluating and advertising it.

Click the link below to find out more.

We will also be designing traps to capture the naughty evil pea!

We will be exploring different kitchen utensils, thinking about what they look like, how they work and what purpose they have.

As historians, we will be looking at how kitchen utensils looked in the past and how they look today.

As artists we will be completing our work with fabric by using all the work we did last half term to inform our final piece by creating a fabric collage of a piece of fruit or vegetable with decoration.

We will know how to work with malleable materials by creating new characters for our 'Supertato' story using salt dough and by creating clay tiles with an Indian design.

We will know how to look closely and notice details when we make observational drawings of a variety of kitchen utensils.

Designing our Indian clay tiles

In P.E, we will be using the Superworm Story as theme to develop our skills of jumping, hopping and skipping.

We will be learning how to travel, under, over and through balancing and climbing equipment. We will be learning how to pull ourselves up on the climbing equipment and revising all of the skills we have learnt in PE during the year.

During music we will continue to sing nursery rhymes and action songs. We will listen to a variety of musical styles and respond through movement and sound. As musicians we will be playing the Indian drums, copying rhythms and creating a short song to perform.

As geographers we will know how to compare environments. We will explore the country India and compare it to our country.

During ICT we will know how to code devices to make them complete a given task.
