Spring 1

Our key concept question for this half term will be:

Should you do the right thing even if others don’t?

This links to the whole school concepts Citizen and Power.

We will be exploring the following Rights Respecting Article 2

'Every child has the right to be treated fairly, no child should be discriminated against because of their gender, language, religion or disability.'

In PSED we will be revisiting our new characters to help us our with different learning behaviours. We will be using Picture News to explore leadership and power asking the questions 'What makes a good leader?' and 'Should our leaders make key decisions or should we all have a say?'

We will use this as a basis for learning about the British Value democracy and how to vote.

Who might be a leader?

Democracy- voting to make either Chinese rice or noddles

In Communication and Language we will know the language of comparison

It is the same because…

It is different because…

We will know how to use the joining word 'and' to extend our ideas and sentences and to use the correct tense when talking about our ideas.

We will understand and respond to questions and ask questions to find out more and check what has been said.

We will be able to use our story map in Literacy to retell the story in sequence.

In Literacy, we will be learning the story of 'The Queen's Hat'

We will know the story by heart and create a story map to help us remember it. We will be using a sentence from the story to learn and write using our phonics.

We will become authors when we innovate the sentence, changing the setting to Burnley.

Now that we have strong hands, bodies and a good pencil grip we will be learning how to form the letters i, l, t, x and z.

Innovated sentences

As mathematicians we will know how to orally count forwards to 20 and backwards from 10. We will be able to read numerals to 20  and write numerals to 10 .

When counting we will know how to subitise to 10  and how to represent sets to 20 using 10 frames, Numicon and objects . We will be embedding our calculating knowledge  by revisiting finding 1 more/1 less using sets  and the composition of numbers to 5 using 10 frames and Numicon . We will be able to add and subtract accurately with numbers to 10 and know the pattern of double facts.

We will know how to describe and name 3D shapes and how to compare objects by weight using both standard and non-standard units.

Heavy and light

During RE we will be learning about the Chinese New Year.
What is the significance of the Chinese New Year Story and the story of Nian?

Are there any similarities and differences between the way people celebrate the Chinese New Year, Christmas, Diwali and Eid?

As part of our culture and beliefs work we will know some similarities and differences between China and England.

What happens when you add white to a colour?

Can you explore the technique of printing?

Can you use your knowledge of tone and printing to create a London sunset cityscape?

As musicians we will be considering these questions...

How do you express yourself to the different types of music that you hear? Do you know how to keep the pulse?

Can you identify the pitch of the music? Can you learn to sing some nursery rhymes and simple songs?

As part of our work on the Chinese New Year we will know how Chinese stories influence Chinese dancing and consider the question 'Can you use what you have seen of Chinese dancing to influence your own dragon dance?'

During PE we will be using the theme of Minibeasts to:

perform the basic skill of jumping, travel over,

under and through climbing equipment

catch a large sponge ball

As historians we will be learning about a significant person from the past – Queen Elizabeth II.

We will be building on our researching knowledge by finding out 'How has Burnley changed? What clues can you notice in the pictures and photographs?'

As geographers, we will be revisiting making a journey map by making one for the journey of the Queen's hat. We will also be learning about Burnley and London and considering, 'Can you identify some key features of Burnley & London?' and 'Can you notice any similarities and differences?'

When learning about the Chinese New Year, we will build on our previous knowledge by answering these questions, 'Can you notice any similarities and differences between China and Great Britain?' 'Can you find the country China on the world map?'
