Spring 1

Spring 1

English

In English, we will be reading ‘Fables’. We will be exploring lots of different fables and the morals that are taught within them. We will use Talk for Writing to learn the story 'The Lion and the Mouse’, then we will write our own versions. We will be inferring character thoughts, feelings and actions throughout this unit. One of our main focuses in our writing is complex sentences using a comma where the subordinating clause comes first. We will learn about subordination for reason and develop characters with the story. We will also sequence events in our stories.

Using dictionaries to find the meanings of words from fables.

Maths

In Maths, we will be learning how to solve problems with knowledge of measurement including length, weight and volume. We need to know how to measure and read scales as well as converting between two measures eg 10 mm = 1 cm.

Children who continue to complete their maths homework and learn their multiplication tables will be at an advantage during this half term's learning!

Science

In Science, we are learning all about the functions of the different parts of flowering plant.

We will be identifying and describing the functions of different parts of flowering plants: roots, stem/trunk, leaves and flowers.

We will have fun setting up experiments, asking questions and making relevant observations of how plants grow in different situations!

Investigation - do plants need light?

PSHCE

In PSHCE this half term, we are going to be learning how to be aware

of different responsibilities and how to set goals for the new year and for our future. We are also going to be identifying basic examples of human rights including the rights of children and learning about the relationship between rights and responsibilities.

Children in 3T are also joining in with linking school. They will be linking with a school called Lytham Hall Park Primary School. Where they will be learning about each other’s communities and then get together for some drama and friendship building activities at Burnley Youth Theatre.

Our welcome video to Lytham Hall Park Primary School

We have received our bunting from our Linking School partner, Lytham Park Hall Primary school. We love it! Thank you!

What job would you like in the future?

Engineering/STEMterprise

Now we have grown our own herbs, we are going to be introduced to the idea of market research! We will design a simple survey to understand our potential customers’ preferences and construct a pictogram to display our findings. We will work in groups to come to a final decision about which flavour of bread our businesses should make.

In this stage, we will use what we learned last half term, thinking about eating healthily and the nutrients included in each food group. Using this learning, and inspiration from recipe books and the internet, we will then be challenged to consider side dishes and sandwich fillings when designing a healthy balanced lunchtime meal that we could make.

Our seeds are growing!

RE

We will learn about the importance of the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) for the Islamic community and why he is seen to be a good role model. We will be identifying Islamic beliefs and values contained within the story of the life of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). We will identify characteristics of a good role model and discuss how good role models can have a positive impact on individuals, communities and societies.

Role models.

Art

In Art this half term, we are going to be exploring the work of William Morris, exploring what influenced and inspired him to create his artwork. We will be linking our learning in Art to our learning in Science and Engineering, as we will be drawing flowering plants from observation. We will also be learning to use digital techniques to duplicate and repeat patterns to create our own motifs.

Observational drawing

Drawing with different media

Music

We will follow charanga scheme. Our unit for this term will be musical styles. We will discuss the following question; How does music bring us closer together?

RRS: Article 31- Right to leisure, play and culture.

P.E.

In Gymnastics, we will develop ways of travelling, balancing on small body parts and create a sequence of travel and balance actions. We will also develop ways of rolling, jumping, shape and landing. We will create a sequence of gymnastic actions and perform these using apparatus. We will evaluate and recognise our successes.

Sticky shapes and small body part balances 🤸

In Net & Wall, we will demonstrate a forehand and backhand shot with consistency. We will direct a shuttlecock and tennis ball to partners to perform rallies. We will also demonstrate simple tactics and incorporate points in a game situation.

Throwing, catching and handling skills 🎾
