Reading Preparation

Things to remember for today's reading test:

  • During initial reading, read carefully and visualise - initial reading only provides you with the 'gist' of the text
  • After you have read a question, always check by looking back at the text - make sure that you close read and that you have the correct answer
  • Look at the question words within questions - who, what, where, how, when
  • If the text says to explain your answer, you must answer in detail using sentences - these are often 'how' or 'what' questions
  • Don't copy big chunks of information from the text - you need to explain and answer in your own words
  • Read all instructions as well as the questions - these often tell you where to look in the text
  • Give yourself enough time to answer all of the answers for all 3 texts - keep your eye on the timer
  • If you are unsure of a word, use the strategies that you have been taught - replace the word with another, does it make sense, read around the word, are there any context clues?
  • Read the questions carefully - if the question asks for a word, only write one word. If the question asks for a phrase, you should write more that one word
  • Don't be scared by 3 mark questions, you can sometimes use bullet points to answer these if the question asks you to find 3 things from the text
