LC: To identify, discuss and collect similes which capture the reader’s imagination.

Today, we are going to be looking at how Clive King, author of Stig of the Dump, has used similes in his story to capture the reader's imagination.

What is a simile?

as sweet as pie          colourful like crayons

My daughter is as sweet as pie.

The daughter is being compared to a sweet pie.

How silly! Or, is it?

What does it actually mean?

This simile suggests that the daughter is kind, friendly and charming.

You would definitely want someone as sweet as pie around you just like you would want to eat a sweet pie I imagine!

Similes we have already come across in chapters one and two of Stig of the Dump.

Why have the flint, tree branch, Stig and the tins been compared to specific things?

The story is written from Barney’s viewpoint (who is a child). We are seeing the events and characters through Barney’s eyes therefore he will be making comparisons based on things he has already seen in his lifetime.

Your Challenge

1. Search through pages 55-60 of Stig of the Dump and look for FIVE similes that Clive King has written into this part of the story.

2. Record each simile you find in your books.

3. Explain what image each simile creates in your mind.
