LC: To explain how paragraphs are used to order ideas and how they are linked.
When we are writing paragraphs, it is important that we use certain words and phrases to order our ideas and show that they link.
Miss Hall has edited the Flying Toads Toured the Town newspaper recount.
Have you noticed what she has done?
Does it sound better or worse than before?
It should have sounded worse.
Did it feel like you were just reading separate paragraphs of information?
That is because Miss Hall got rid of some specific words and phrases that help link the paragraphs together in order to guide the reader through the writing.
Take a look at the newspaper recount again now that Miss Hall has added them back in.
Does it read better?
Does it feel like every paragraph and the ideas link now?
Those special words or phrases are called adverbials. They help to sequence events in time order and help guide the reader throughout the whole text. It makes your writing much easier to read.
These adverbials were used in the newspaper recount to link paragraphs and ideas:
Firstly, Around 11:21pm, Meanwhile, In addition, Eventually, At 4:38pm, Today
