Reading

Today, we are going to learn about 2 different types of poems. The first one is called a Limerick and the second one is called a Kenning.

Read the slide below which explains what a Limerick is.

Now, have a look at the page below which includes two Limericks.

Can you find the rhyming words?

Do they follow the rules of a Limerick?

Well done. In Limerick 1, lines 1,2 and 5 all rhyme – Leeds, seeds and weeds.

Line 3 and 4 rhyme – hour and flower.

In Limerick 2, the rhyming words were – heath, teeth and underneath in lines 1, 2 and 5.

In lines 3 and 4, the rhyming words were pain and again.

Now have a look at the example above. It is a Limerick related to bullying. Does it follow the rules of a Limerick? Does it have rhyming words?

That's right. It is a funny humorous poem with 5 lines and it following the rhyming pattern.

Now, in your home learning book, you need to write a limerick related to bullying.

Make sure it follows the rules and it rhymes!

Good luck!

Now, we are going to learn about the second type of poem. This is called a Kenning.

Read the slide below which explains what a Kenning is.

Lets learn how to write a kenning. It is not as hard as you think.

Now have a look at my example of a Kenning – have you noticed that it is related to bullying?

Now you are going to have a go at writing a Kenning of your own that relates to bullying.

There is no set number of lines but each sentence should start with an A and followed by 2 words – an object and a verb.

Once you have finished, take a picture of your Limerick and Kenning and email it to your teacher through an email on Purple Mash.

Good luck!
