L.C. To navigate texts in order to retrieve information.

Within non-fiction texts we often find they use headings and subheadings.

Why are headings and subheadings used?

How does this help the reader?

Your teacher will now model using the headings/subheading.

The Life of a Viking

The Vikings came from the area of modern Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden and Denmark). The Vikings first arrived in Britain around 1000 years ago, in an attempt to find land to claim as their own. They raided and pillaged the monastery of Lindisfarne in Northumbria, stealing precious gold and jewels.

Viking Longboats

Viking men built longboats for war and trading, which were also sometimes called ‘Dragonships’. These were long, narrow wooden boats for travelling quickly through the water and escaping from enemies. These were lightweight enough to carry over land when necessary, so they could begin to make settlements or carry out raids.

Viking Clothes

Male and female Vikings needed to wear thick clothes, or they would be left cold due to the low Scandinavian temperatures. They both wore leather shoes with thick socks. Viking women wore long linen dresses with a thick woollen tunic, whilst men wore cloth trousers with a woollen shirt, both tightened with a sash or belt.

Viking Homes

Vikings lived in ‘Longhouses’ that were mostly made out of wood, stone or turf with thatched roofs. A fire was lit in the centre of the room for light and warmth. The Longhouses had holes in the roof, so that smoke from the fire could escape. This hole was also used to let in sunlight, as there was no electricity during the Viking times.

Viking children did not go to school but instead stayed at home learning skills they would need when they were older.

Did you know?

There was no employment during Viking times. People were mostly craftsmen, farmers or traders, so that they could grow their own crops and make resources.

What did Vikings do to make sure they could see in their homes?

What made it easy for the Vikings to use Longboats to escape from enemies?
