LC: To describe what a Christian might do during lent and why.

Time to reflect:

Is sacrifice an important part of religious life?

Lent is the period leading up to Easter for Christians.

In 2021, Lent began on Wednesday 17th February and ended on Thursday 1st April.

It lasts for forty days and forty nights to mirror the time that Jesus spent in the wilderness. At this time, Christians prepare for Easter by trying to be more like Jesus. They often choose to give something up to test their own self-discipline and find out if they can resist temptation like Jesus did.

Here are three Christian children.

                              C

Child A said: ‘I have decided to give up buying clothes for Lent.  I will give the money I save to charity.’

Child B said: ‘I am giving up my computer/tablet for Lent. This will mean I have more time to spend with my family.’

Child C said: ‘I have decided to give up sweets and cake this Lent. This helps me to remember children in other countries who don’t have enough food.’

Who do you think made the biggest sacrifice for Lent? Why?

I think child ___ made the biggest sacrifice due to the fact that ____________________________.

If I were in their position, I would have found this ________________________ as _______________.

Why might a Christian say that making a real sacrifice is important during Lent?

(Think back to everything you have learned so far in this unit.)

Christians believe that making a real sacrifice is important during lent because __________________________________________

_____________________________________________________. When Jesus went into the Wilderness for forty day and forty nights, Christians believe that Jesus taught them to ____________________ , ____________________

and _________________________________. When Christians sacrifice something that is really important to them during lent, it shows __________________________________________.

Record your ideas in your RE book.
