Talk with you partner:

Do you have a scooter at home?

Have you seen them used? If so, where?

Do you know the difference between a scooter and an e-scooter?

What do you think are the positives and negatives of using e-scooters?

Now it's your turn to think on your own:

Do you think e-scooters are safe to use on roads?

Write your answer on a post-it so it can be added to the classroom display. If you are working at home, send your thoughts to this question in an email to your teacher so they too can be added to the wall.

In school, we learn about and follow British Values. This week we are going to focus The Rule of Law.

Did you know... it is against the law to use a privately owned e-scooter unless it is on private land?

As we are a Rights Respecting School, it is also important to know that Article 40 states that a child accused or guilty of breaking the law must be treated with dignity and respect. They should have a fair trial and their privacy must be respected at all times.

In some towns and cities across the UK, tests are being carried out to see if e-scooters can be rented out for people to travel.

To hire one, you must have a driver's licence and have completed an online course.

Privately owned e-scooters can travel 68mph (cars travel 70mph on a motorway) but these are limited to 15.5mph.

They cost £1 to unlock and then 14p-20p per minute.

Now you know more information, have your views about e-scooters changed? Do you have anymore positives and negatives to add?

Some people think they are a good alternative to cars and taxis because they are better for the environment. In cities, people can get to where they want to go much quicker.

Other people think they are dangerous. In London (July 2020-April 2021) 574 crimes involved e-scooters. Some people think they are dangerous for the visually impaired because they are quiet.

Now you have had chance to share your thoughts about e-scooters, learned about the laws regarding them and listened to the opinions of others, it's time to make up your own mind.

Complete this 2Do:

  • Draw a picture of where you think e-scooters should be used.
  • Write your opinion about them using the questions below to help you.

Should they be used by anybody?

Should they be allowed on roads and motorways?

Should they only be used by adults?

Should they only be allowed in private spaces?
