Parent workshop - phonics for writing

Segmenting is the skill of ‘chopping up’ a word into it’s phonemes (sounds)

At school we use ‘phonic fingers’ to support children with identifying how many sounds they can hear in a word.

Have a go with these words…

sock

leg

man

car

moon

Once children can do this and have learnt some letters they can put them together to start spelling. To start with we use a ‘phoneme frame’.

This is a phoneme frame for a word with 3 phonemes (sounds)

Let’s have a go at putting some words in the phoneme frame. If your child finds writing tricky you could use magnetic letters or letter cards.
