Inverted Commas

Inverted commas are used to show what the words actually spoken by a person or character are.

When you are writing, inverted commas (also called speech marks) go before and after any words that a character says.

For example: I’m hungry, complained Freda.

‘I’m hungry’ are the words that Freda says out loud (also called direct speech), so the inverted commas go at the start and end of those words.

e.g.

There’s some porridge on the stove, explained her mum.

Freda announced, “But  I’ve already had some porridge today!

Any punctuation goes inside the inverted commas at the end of what the character is saying.

Notice the use of a comma.

We use a comma after the introductory clause.

E.g. Sam said,

If the direct speech is at the beginning of the sentence, put the comma before the final inverted commas.

E.g. “I was in London last year,” she said.

Insert the commas and inverted commas into the correct place in the following sentences.
