Divide a 3-digit by a 1-digit number

Division is used when sharing a number into another number. Division is the opposite of multiplying.

What is 897 ÷ 5?

The number you are dividing by goes outside of the ‘bus stop,’ while the larger number goes inside.

We start with the hundreds.

How many 500’s are there in 800?

1 , you just put a 1 in the hundreds column and rename the remaining into the tens column.

How many were remaining?

300

Since 300 is made up of 30 tens, you just put a 3 in the one column next to the 9. We now have 39 tens.

Next are the tens.

How many 50's are there in 390?

7 , you just put a 7 in the tens column and rename the remaining into the ones column.

How many were remaining?

40

Since 40 is made up of 4 tens, you just put a 4 in the one column next to the 7. We now have 47.

Next is the ones.

How many 5's are there in 45?

5 x 9 = 45

9 is placed in the ones column and remaining are put after the remaining symbol.

How many were remaining?

2

This means, 895 ÷ 5 = 179 r2
