What is a word family

The words in a word family are related to each other by a root word.

To find a new word in a word family we can add prefixes and suffixes to the root word.

Below are some suffixes we can use.

 

-ing,  -er,   -s,   -ed,  -ful,  -en,  -sion,  -ness

 

 

Word family examples

  • teach, teacher, teaching
  • Scare, scary, scaring
  • fright, frightening, frighten

 

 

Look at the table below. Find the words that belong to the same word family. Write the word families in your workbooks.
