2 Step Word Problems

When looking at any word problem, we can use our R.U.C.S.A.C to help us.

Let’s use this in an example.

Mr Bean, the farmer, makes 840 bottles of apple juice to sell. He packs them in boxes of 4. The boxes are then packed into 7 vans. How many boxes are packed into each van?

R - Read - Read the question from start to finish.

U - Understand -  We need to find out how many boxes there will be. Then, we need to find out how many boxes there will be in each van.

C - Choose - Step 1 - We need to divide 840 by 4.

Step 2 - We need to divide the answer to Step 1 by 7.

S - Solve - Step 1

Step 2

A - Answer - There are 30 boxes in each van.

C - Check - Complete the inverse.
