Factors


If I know,  3 x 6 = 18

I also know that , 6 x 3 = 18

 

When working out a multiplication questions, it doesn’t matter which order we multiply the numbers.

 

 

 

You also can use your number knowledge to help work out questions such as:

8 x 4

To work this out you can, use repeated addition

8 x 4 = 8 + 8 + 8 + 8 = 32


 

 

You may also see Commutative triangles as shown below.

 

 

The images above show a triangle.

The bottom 2 numbers (5 and 9) multiply together to make the number at the top.

Alternatively, we can divide the top number by either of the bottom numbers and the answer will be the number remaining.

This can be shown using the calculation family.

5 x 9 = 45

9 x 5 = 45

45 ÷ 5 = 9

45 ÷ 9 = 5
