L.C. To be able to divide 3-digit numbers with a remainder.

Today, we are going to work at a new method you can use to work out division calculations.

We are going to look at long division or chunking.

The initial setup of the question looks the same.

From here, we can subtract chunks of information we do know from the number inside the bus stop.

e.g. we know that 3 x 3 = 9

Therefore, we know 3 x 30 = 90

We can take 90 away, remember that this is 3 tens (30) times 3.

Now, we subtract another fact we know.

What is the biggest number, in our 3 times table, can we subtract from 10.

9 = 3 x 3

Subtract 9 from 10.

Remember to make a note that this is 3 ones.

We have 1 remaining.

Now to work out the answer. We use our notes down the right to get our answer.

We add our numbers together. For this question that would be 3 tens (30) and 3 ones (3)

30 + 3 = 33

Don’t forget about the remainders.

33 r 1
