This week we are going to continue to look at shape.

Today we are going to start by looking at perimeter.

Perimeter is the distance around the outside of a shape.

To work out the perimeter we add up the distance of each side together.

Lets have a look at this rectangle first.

The opposite sides are the same length.

To work the perimeter of this shape out we need to add the sides together:

12 + 12 + 7 + 7 =

12+ 12 = 24

7 + 7 = 14

24 +14 = 38

Answer:  38 cm

This same method would work no matter what  shape you have.

Lets look at an irregular shape.

To work out the perimeter add up the sides.

1 + 2 + 6 + 3 + 5 + 2 + 2 + 3

1 + 2 = 3 + 6 = 9 + 3 = 12 + 5 = 17 + 2 = 19 + 2 = 21 + 3 = 24

Answer:  24 m

Remember to find out the sides of a shape then add them together. Some of the shapes you are working with today are irregular. Count the squares along each side to help.

Go onto Purple Mash and complete the '2D shape Perimeter' 2Do.
