Today we are going to look at place value , partitioning and comparing.

First lets start of with a number.

2, 414 ,568

This number is: Two million, four hundred and fourteen thousand, five hundred and sixty eight.

To help me read that number ii need to know the place value chart. this is shown below.

When writing out a number we put H, T and O together HTh, TTh and Th together.

Now lets partition the number

2, 414 ,568

When doing this start from left and work to the right

The value of the 2 is = 2, 000, 000 = Two Million

The value of the first 4 is = 400, 000 = Four Hundred Thousand

The value of the 1 is = 10, 000 = Ten Thousand

The value of the second 4 is = 4, 000 = Four Thousand

The value of the 5 is = 500 = Five Hundred Million

The value of the 6 is = 60 = Sixty

The value of the 8 is = 8 = Eight

This could also be done by using the following method

2, 000, 000 + 400, 000 + 10, 000 + 4,000 + 500 + 60 + 8

Knowing this will help you in todays task.

Have a go at partitioning the following in your home learning books.

1, 548, 936

7, 642, 359

Now Lets have a look at comparing.

When comparing a number the easiest way is to start from the Left

Which is bigger?

759, 468    or    759, 648

So if we start at the left and look at both numbers.

Both numbers have 700, 000

Both numbers have 50, 000

Both numbers have 9, 000

Now the first number has 400 whereas the second number has 600

Which is bigger?

So our greater number is: 759, 648

Keep going from left to right until there is a difference.

Have a go at comparing the following in your home learning books.

1, 248, 694    or    1, 428, 694

5, 458, 753    or    5, 458, 735

Using what you know now, go onto Purple mash and complete the 2do that has been set. Mr Hindman is always on Purple Mash for you to email and ask for help.
