Count 16 cubes. The cubes are flowers and that 4 of the flowers die. How many flowers do you have left?Can you explain how you got to your answer?

 

My friend said that if we broke apart 16 it would be helpful. What does he mean by this? Can you show me?

We can break apart a number so that we only need to subtract the ones: 16 becomes 10 and 6, 6 – 4 is 2, therefore 16 – 4 is 12. 

 

During Guided Practice, can you break up the numbers so that we are only subtracting the ones?
