LC: to multiply multiples of 10 by a 1-digit number.

Let’s look at the In Focus task.

How many oranges are there in the four boxes altogether?

How could you work this out?

You could count up in 20’s.

 20, 40, 60, 80

You could count up in 10’s, remembering that each bag is 2 lots of 10.

10, 20      30, 40     50, 60     70, 80

What is the multiplication statement for this problem?

There are 4 lots of 20 oranges, so that is 4 x 20.

That’s a tricky calculation.

What if we make it easier?

We know that

      4 x 2 = 8

so   4 x 20 = 80

Is this true?    Yes it is.

          3 x 40 =

so    3 x 4 = 12 x 10 = 120

Wow that’s impressive!

      4 x 80

so   4 x 8 = 32 x 10 = 320

Have a go at question 3 in your blue book.

Now let’s try these.

As you are working from home, complete the task in your blue book.

Write out the calculations and answer them.

Use the pictures to help you with your times table knowledge.

Is 30 x 6 the same as 6 x 30?

Well done, yes it is.  Multiplication questions can be written both ways. You still get the same answer.

       30 x 6 =

so    3 x 6 = 18 x 10 = 180.

Now that you have finished, check your work then send a photo through purple mash to your class teacher.
