LC- Finding the area of parallelograms.

Yesterday, we looked at finding the area of rectangles. Hopefully you would have found this easy.

BUT, how do we find the area of shapes that are not rectangles?

Have a look at the following image.

We know that to find the area of a rectangle, we calculate base times height.

Can we do that here?

This is a parallelogram. What do we know about these shapes. Is a rectangle a parallelogram?

Are there any similarities between this shape and a rectangle?

Look how one person solved the problem.

So the area of a parallelogram can be calculated the same way as the area of a rectangle.

Here is a video to prove that the area is the same.

Now look closely at the following images. Can you see which numbers need to be used? Would you have chosen the correct ones?

Now we will work on the guided practice together. Look carefully to see where the rectangle is. This will help you decide which numbers to use.

If you feel confident then go to p69 of Maths no Problem.
