L.C. To be able to solve word problems involving fractions.
What do we know?
What do we want to find out?
How far is the race?
Each quarter of the bar above represents 1 km.
How many parts should we break each kilometre into?
Why?
Each person runs 2⁄3 km.
How many people do we need?
With the person sitting next to you, explain what I just did using thirds in your explanation?
We know that 1 km = 3 thirds, therefore 4 km must be equivalent to 12 thirds because 3 × 4 = 12.
There are six 2 thirds in 4 km, so 6 runners are needed.
Similarly to Monday, we will discuss both models shown to work out the answer to the guided practice.
