LC: To discuss and record ideas for planning focusing on similes and non-standard English for the Snargets.

Yesterday, you generated ideas for a new chapter that could be included in the Stig of the Dump story.

It involved Barney and the Snargets.

Today, you are going to develop the Snarget characters in more detail by creating non-standard direct speech that they could say in the chapter and similes to describe them.

In your teacher's chapter, Barney sees the Snargets lighting a fire in the copse near the chalk pit. He climbs a tall horse chesnut tree and throws conkers at the Snargets. The Snargets are furious and shout threats.

After a while, they whisper and make a plan to trick Barney. They say they are leaving and that they've left marshmallows near the fire that are delicious. Barney falls for the trap and goes to cook the marshmallows to find there are none. The Snargets creep up on him and say "Gotcha!". They threaten to burn his clothes in the fire, rub nettles on his skin and make him touch a burning hot stick.

Barney dances around the fire, races through the copse and down to the bottom of the chalk pit to Stig's Den. Stig is sharpening his spear ready for hunting and making arrows for his bow. He chases after the boys with his spear and fires some arrows that skim the boys' legs.

Teacher ideas for similes

The eldest Snarget boy growled like a grizzly bear.

The youngest Snarget squeaked like a mouse when he saw Stig.

The second Snarget sprinted out of the pit like an Olympic runner in a race.

Can you come up with your own similes to describe the Snargets based on your story ideas?

Teacher ideas for non-standard English

" 'Ere, 'oo's chucking conkers at me? Pack it in! snarled the eldest Snarget

"Gotcha! Ya thought ya could trick us Barney, didn't you?" sneered the second Snarget

"Let's take 'is jumper and burn it int' fire," suggested the youngest Snarget
