Lesson 1

LC: to name and locate counties and cities in the UK.

Today we are going on a scavenger hunt, using our maps!

Lets recap on what a county is, can you remember?

Counties are sections into which some countries are divided into for local government.

What are cities?

Cities are large and important towns where many people live and work.

What are towns?

Towns are areas with streets, houses, and buildings that are larger than villages but usually smaller than cities.

How can we tell whether somewhere is a town, city or county on a map?

You can see that major cities in the UK are labelled in bold writing.

Also, in the 'quick facts' section, it tells you that this place is a city

You have to zoom in closer to see towns on google maps.

Again, in the 'quick facts' section, it tells you that Burnley is a town.

Counties such as Lancashire are outlined in red on your map.

When you search for a county, the 'quick facts' section will tell you that it is a county and also the county town.

What is Lancashire's county town?

yesIts now over to you!yes

For your scavenger hunt today, you need to find the list of places on your maps and identify whether they are towns, cities or counties.

There is a prize up for grabs for the people who find them all correctly!
