Conjunctions

Today we are going to revisit a skill we have learned in Year 2 already. We are going to use conjunctions to connect ideas in a sentence.

Co-ordinating conjunctions

and, so, but

Subordinating conjunctions

because, when, if, so that

When we use co-ordinating conjunctions, we join two ideas that make sense on their own.

I love cricket. I am not very good at throwing.

I love cricket but I am not very good at throwing.

Subordinating conjunctions are used to give the reader more detail about why or when something happens.

I got a certificate. I finished my times tables.

I got a certificate because I finished my times tables.

We can use subordinating conjunctions at the beginning of a sentence, too.

When I finished my times tables, I got a certificate.

Now it's your turn to choose the best subordinating conjunction to make the sentence make sense. Some are at the beginning and some are in the middle. Read each sentence carefully.
