What is a noun?


A noun is a word that names something, such as a person, place, thing, or idea.

 

Let’s have a look at the following sentence. 
 

Deep in the woods, the children crept cautiously towards the house.

What is the general noun in this sentence?

 

Deep in the woods, the children crept cautiously towards the house.

 

House is our general noun. We can make this more precise by using a precise noun such as: shack, mansion, hut, cabin or lodge.


By using a precise noun, we provide more detail for the reader. This allows them to imagine the scenario more clearly. 
 

Here is another sentence. 
 

I went shopping to buy shoes.

 

What is the general noun?
