LC: To identify word class within poetry
Today we are going to look at some of the word class that Alfred Noyes uses in his famous poem - The Highwayman.
REVISION - What are the following word classes? What are their functions and are there any clues to help us to find them?
Adjectives
Nouns
Verbs
Prepositions
Let's have a look at one of the verses together. Which word classes can you see in this following verse?
The wind was a torrent of darkness upon the gusty trees,
The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas,
The road was a ribbon of moonlight looping the purple moor,
And the highwayman came riding--
Riding--riding--
The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn door.
Copy the following date, LC and table in your Literacy books.
Add the words that we identified from the first verse to your table. Make sure that you add them to the correct column.
Use the rest of the lesson to fill in the table with as many adjectives, nouns, verbs and prepositions as you can find throughout the rest of the poem.
