Last week we were using subordinating conjunctions give the reader detail about why something happened.

Subordinating conjunctions can also be used to tell the reader when something is happening or has happened. 

Let's take a look at how Red Crayon has used subordination for time in his letter to Duncan.

There are lots of ways we can say when something has happened.

after

before

as soon as

since

until

when

whenever

while

These conjunctions can be used at the beginning or in the middle of the sentence.

When I have checked my work, I go on the ipad.

 

I go on the ipad when I have checked my work.

Let's try another one together.

 

Before I go to sleep, .... (you finish the sentence)

 

Now see if you can say the sentence with the word before in the middle.

Your task today is to pick three words from the list and write a sentence using each one. Remember your conjunction can be at the beginning of the sentence or in the middle.
