Today, we are going to start by thinking back to what we have already learned about verbs.

What is a verb?

Well done if you remembered that verbs are words that describe an action, state or occurrence.

This picture should remind you of the sentences we wrote using verbs to describe what was happening.

This week we are going to look at using verbs in the past tense. But first, let's look at how we can use verbs in different tenses by clicking on the picture below.

We used past tense verbs in our recount of Robert Falcon Scott because the events happened a long time ago. This week we will be using them in our story.

Let's look at the opening lines from our shorter version of the story:

Tom's dad was a famous explorer.

One morning, Tom was shocked to see a picture of his dad on the front of the morning paper.

If you are in school, talk with the person next to you about what past tense verbs you can see. (Remember to always face forwards!) If you are home, share your ideas with an adult in your house.

Well done if you saw these past tense verbs:

Tom's dad was a famous explorer.

One morning, Tom was shocked to see a picture of his dad on the front of the morning paper.

Now we are going to continue learning our story to tell. Remember to include the actions you came up with last week.
