LC: To develop an awareness of composition, scale and proportion

Have a look at the Lowry pictures below. Think about how he has used composition, scale and proportion in his paintings of the industrial north of England. Also, have a look at the colours and detail in his work - what does this tell us about life at this time?

What did you notice?

In his landscapes, Lowry used perspective to ensure that his paintings looked in proportion. What does this mean?

Let's look more into perspective and how to achieve this in our artwork.

We call this one point perspective. It just uses one point known as a vanishing point (the point in the distance at where everything vanishes because it's too far away for us to see it).

Have another look at the Lowry picture below called 'The Fever Van'. Can you work out where the vanishing point would be?

Bearing this in mind, Lowry's art could also be rather naive (unsophisticated) too. Have a look at the steps that the boy is standing on - they are simple and almost look slightly out of proportion.

Lowry's characters are also naive too! Let's take a closer look.

Let's have a look at the PowerPoint presentation below too.

Your Go!

You are going to be given two pieces of paper to have a go. On one of them, have a go at using one point perspective to try to create some of the building just like Lowry did. On the other, you are going to have a go at sketching some figures in the style of LS Lowry.
