Spring 1

English

We will be reading texts around the theme ‘birds’. We will be using Talk for Writing to learn a non-chronological report, so we can write our own version. We will identify technical words and phrases about birds and explore how authors use paragraphs to inform readers.

We will also be reading Jill Tomlinson's The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark. We will explore the language used and identify similarities and differences between different chapters. We will then use this information to help us write a chapter of our own.

Using conjunctions and topical vocabulary

We will be learning to accurately read temperature in Celsius and estimate temperature and to read thermometers to confirm the estimate.

We will be learning to read and interpret a picture graph with confidence.

Science

As Scientists, we will learn about the basic stages in a life cycle for animals, including humans and how they have offspring that grow into adults.

We will learn that why exercise, a balanced diet and good hygiene are important and what animals need to survive.

Computing

In Computing, we will be learning that not everything on the internet is true. We will use technology to retrieve, organise and manipulate digital content.

As a Rights Respecting School, we will be looking at Article 19: Every child has the right to be protected from harm.

History

As Historians, we will be learning about the life of the Towneley family and visiting Towneley Hall.

We will make comparisons between our own lives and those of others in the past by asking and answering questions.

R.E.

We will answer the questions 'How do we respond to things that really matter?' and 'How and why do symbols show us what is important in religion?'

We will be investigating what Buddhists use to create a shrine, how and why they meditate and consider ways we can keep ourselves calm.

We will use words including warmth, wisdom, knowledge sharing, caring and valuing.

PSHCE

As citizens, we will learn about the different roles and responsibilities people have in their community

We will learn to recognise the ways, we are the same as, and different to, other people and understand that people have different strengths and interests that enable them to do different jobs.

To know that people make different choices about how to save and spend money

To understand the difference between needs and wants; that sometimes people may not always be able to have the things they want.

PE

As Gymnasts, we will develop skills of travelling on hands and feet, explore balancing on different body parts and perform rolling actions. We will link these actions together to create a simple sequence and adapt a sequence of moves to apparatus.

British Values and Rights Respecting School

We will continue to develop our understanding of British Values linking them through our learning and in our assembly times. This half term we will focus on Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect and the Rule of Law.

We will focus on Article 29: Education must develop every child's personality, talents and abilities to the full. It must encourage the child's respect for human rights, as well as respect for their parents, their own and other cultures, and the environment.

We will also focus on Article 13: Every child has the right to find things out and share what they think with others.
