How they fought in battle
The Roman Army was well-organised and trained. Each soldier took pride in their skills and to lose in battle was seen as disgraceful.
Before the soldiers fought in battle, they were grouped into a century (100 men) with each group being led by a centurion. When in battle, Roman tactics involved advancing in a tortoise shape where shields acted as a shell protecting them from attack. Also, they fired heavy boulders or bundles of burning sticks from a machine called a ballista. It was like a big catapult.
