In Talking Maths this week, we have been looking at halving numbers up to 200.
Yesterday, we discussed that if we are halving a number this means we are dividing by 2.
During our practice yesterday, we looked at halving 2 digit numbers.
When dividing any 3-digit number, we can partition the number into hundred, tens and units. We then share in the same way we did yesterday.
To half 128:
Half of 100 = 50
Half of 20 = 10
Half of 8 = 4
50 + 10 + 4 = 64
If the number in the hundred or tens column is an odd number, we can use the nearest even hundred or ten to help us.
To half 152:
Find half of 100 = 50
Half of 50 - half of 40 = 20
The extra 10 we rename as 10 ones.
Half of 12 = 6
50 + 20 + 6 = 76
Using this process, work out half of the following numbers.
166
92
148
180
76
