Spring Term 2

English
In English this term, we will be reading books by the authors Debi Gliori and Beatrix Potter.

We will invent our own versions of the Peter Rabbit story.

 

 

In Phonics, we will be learning new sounds and using our phonics knowledge to read and write.

We will also be reading and writing tricky words.

Drawing actions to help remember sentences about Debi Gliori.

Maths

In maths we are looking at number to 40 and solving addition and subtraction word problems. 
 

We will also be learning about calculation - multiplication, division and fractions.

Counting in tens and ones.

Counting to 40.

Science

In Science we will be identifying and naming a variety of animals, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.

 

We will also observe and comment on the changes across the four seasons, specifically looking at Spring.

Year 1 have been grouping animals using different criteria e.g. animal groups/features.

Year 1 drew pictures and labelled some of the animals they know.

During Science week we made chairs using recyclable materials for the 3 bears.

Geography

 

In geography we will develop a geographical understanding of the United Kingdom this will include naming, locating and identifying the four counties and capital cities.

Locating and naming countries/ capital cities in the United Kingdom.

ICT

This half term in ICT we will be using Purple Mash to code instructions and begin to learn coding vocabulary: objects and actions.

RE

In RE this term we will look closely at the Judaism religion. The focus question is why might people put their trust in God?

 

The key question throughout the year is what do people say about God?

Making a class promise.

PSHCE

This half term we will be discussing shared responsibilities: to know why people and animals need to be looked after and cared for.

 

We will also be discussing how to be safe: to know how to respond safely to adults they don’t know. 
 

To know what to do if they feel unsafe or worried for themselves or others.

 

To understand how to keep safe at home (including around electrical appliances) and fire safety (e.g. not playing with matches and lighters)

 

To understand ways to keep safe in familiar and unfamiliar environments (e.g. beach, shopping centre, park, swimming pool, on the street). 

 

To know what to do if there is an accident and someone is hurt.

Art

We will be using a range of art skills and linking our Art to 'Peter Rabbit', our English story.

 

Skills that we will be focusing on are:

Drawing a selection of lines and marks.

Drawing shapes from observations.

Demonstrate basic painting skills and techniques using thick and thin marks at various scales.

 

We will also look at the art work of Beatrix Potter.

We have been painting rabbit artwork linked to our author/illustrator work using thick and thin paintbrushes and colour mixing.

Music

We will be following the Scheme on Charanga YUMU

'Introducing Tempo and Dynamics'.

 

We will be listening to and appraising a range of different music.

We will listen to different musical sstyles - Blues, Baroque, Latin, Bhangra, Folk and Funk.

 

We will also be singing, improving our rhythm skills, improvising and playing our own music.

PE

Orienteering

In Orienteering, we will follow our Whole School Cross-Curricular Orienteering Scheme of Work. We will use a legend/key on a map to help us understand basic symbols and colours and, use our navigation skills to move forward, backwards, left and right. We will work individually and as a team to recognise, orientate and follow our School Orienteering map to complete challenges. 

 

Well-being

Throughout this half term, we will be exploring lots of different exercises and activities that will help develop physical and emotional well-being.

Learning outside of the Classroom

Learning outside the classroom is an integral part of learning at Stoneyholme hence we will be using our outside area for lots of our learning.
