Reading

Today we are going to be looking at root words and understanding how we use prefixes and suffixes to change the meaning of root words.

Step 1

We need to read the information on the 2 slides below to remind ourselves of what a root word is. If we look at the root word shown below, 'employ'. As you can see a prefix and a suffix has been added to 'employ' and this has changed the meaning of the word.

A prefix is added to the beginning of a word.

A suffix is added to the end of a word.

Think of the root word 'safe'. Can you think of any prefixes or suffixes we can add to this word?

Step 2

Look at the model below. The words from inside the box have been placed correctly in the sentences so they make perfect sense. This is what you are going to be doing when completing part of your task so look carefully.

The question that need answering below is: What is the root word?

So, can you answer it? What is the root word in the model?

Task

First, write the date and LC. Then, look at the sentences below. You are going to write these sentences out and using the words from the box, you are going to write the correct word in the sentence so they make perfect sense (like the model). Once you have complete all three sentences identify the root word.

When you have finished, send a picture of your writing to your teacher on Seesaw!
