LC: To be able to convert units of time

Have a look at the question below. We need to convert the amount of hours the journey takes into days.

What would that look like?

How many hours are there in a day?

We know there are 24 hours in 1 day.

How many hours would there be in 10 days?

24 x 10 = 240

10 days = 240 hours

We can halve 240 hours to find the amount of hours in 5 days. (240 divided by 2 = 120)

5 days = 120 hours

Let's convert 210 hours in to days.

If we know our multiples of 24 we could partition 210 hours so it is easier to calculate the number of days.

What does this mean?

If we take out 120 hours (5 days) we are left with 90 hours.

What can we partition 90 into?

We can partition 90 hours in to 72 hours and 18 hours.

72 hours = 3 days

The journey takes a total of 8 days and 18 hours.

This is modeled below. Now we need to calculate the arrival date.

The arrival date might change depending on the month. This is because  it depends on how many days there are in each month. Trains departing on the 11th May will arrive on the 19th May.

Trains departing on the 25th May will arrive on the 2nd June.

Let's practice

Have a look at the question below. 100 hours = ? days

So we know 1 day = 24 hours

2 days = 48 hours     3 days = 72 hours

4 days = 96 hours.

He worked over 4 full days but less than 5.

100 hours = 96 hours (4 days) + 4 hours

It would have taken him 4 hours and 4 days
