Today we are going to look at converting improper fractions into mixed numbers. We are also going to work on changing mixed numbers to improper fractions.

First we need to know what mixed number and a improper fraction are.

What is a Mixed number?

A mixed number is a number consisting of a whole number and a proper fraction.

Which number is the Denominator?

An improper fraction is a fraction in which the numerator is greater than the denominator.

We are going to begin by converting a mixed number into an improper fraction.

To do this we follow 3 steps.

  1. Multiply the whole number part by the fraction's denominator.
  2. Add that to the numerator.
  3. Then write the result on top of the denominator.

Lets have a look at how we this is completed.

Our mixed number is below.

Step 1

Multiply the whole number part by the fraction's denominator

The Whole number is our mixed number is 2.

The fractions Denominator is 5.

So we need to multiply these together.

2 X 5 = 10

Step 2

Add that to the numerator.

Our answer from step 1 was 10.

The numerator in the original mixed number was 3.

So we add these together.

10 + 3 = 13

Step 3

Then write the result on top of the denominator.

Remember the Denominator in the original mixed number was 5.

Our new numerator is 13.

Our Improper fraction = 13

                                       ---

                                        5

Lets have a look at another one. This time less explanation.

Step 1

Multiply the whole number part by the fraction's denominator

3 X 5 = 15

Step 2

Add that to the numerator.

15 + 3 = 18

Step 3

Then write the result on top of the denominator.

Our Improper fraction = 18

                                       ---

                                        4

Task 1

Convert the following mixed numbers into improper fractions.

Now we are going to have a look at going the opposite way. From improper fraction to mixed number.

Just like before we have 3 steps. These are:

  1. Divide the numerator by the denominator.
  2. Write down the whole number result.
  3. Use the remainder as the new numerator over the denominator. This is the fraction part of the mixed number.

Look at how this is done in this example.

Our improper fraction is:

Step 1

Divide the numerator by the denominator.

The numerator is 13.

The denominator is 6.

So we need to divide 13 by 6.

How many 6's go into 13?

2 r1

Step 2

Write down the whole number result.

The whole number result is 2. (see answer to step 1)

Step 3

Use the remainder as the new numerator over the denominator. This is the fraction part of the mixed number.

So we had r1. This means that 1 will be our new numerator.

  1

----

  6

Answer

Our mixed number = 2  1/6

Task 2

Convert the following improper fractions into mixed numbers.
