Today we are going to look at adding fractions.

Let’s first look at labelling a fraction.

There are 2 key words/vocabulary that we need when talking about fractions. These 2 are Numerator and Denominator.

Look at the Image below.

Numerator - the number above the line. This shows how many of the parts indicated by the denominator are taken.

Denominator - the number below the line. This shows how many the whole number is divided up into.

Now lets look at how we add fractions.

First we will keep it simple.

First thing to check is: are both Denominators the same? In this case they are they are both 24.

Because this is the case it makes adding the fractions easy. If both Denominators are the same then the answer will also have the same denominator.  So for this question the answers Denominator will be 24.

Next we need to add the Numerator together. 15 + 3 = 18 .

Answer =         18

                        ----

                        24

Lets have a look at another one.

Are the Denominators the same?

Yes – 8

Now add the Numerators.

3 + 2 = 5

Answer :          5

                       ---

                        8
