LC- To multiply fractions
We are going to continue multiplying fractions today.
Last week, we used our pictures to find the answers and then we noticed a pattern.
1/4 x 1/2 = 1/8
Did you notice the pattern? Multiply the numerators 1x1 = 1
then multiply the denominators 4 x 2 = 8.
If you need to, go back and look at the examples from last week and see if this works.
Have a look at the following question and remember everything you did last week. You need to use the pictures.
How would you use the picture to find 1/4 x 2/3 =
So, to find 1/4 of 2/3, you need to cut the 2/3 part into 4.
We have to make all the parts the same size, so that means there would be 6 pieces in total and we need just 1 of them. The answer is 1/6.
With pictures, it is easy to see how to cut the bits up to get the answer.
What about trying the other way?
1/4 x 2/3 = 1/6
1x 2 = 2 and 4 x 3 = 12 so the answer this way is 2/12
So the multiplying the numerators and denominators doesn't work. Or does it?
Is 1/6 and 2/12 the same?
Yes it is, we need to simplify the answer if we work the calculations out this way.
Now try the guided work. Use whichever method you prefer.
Now try the Maths NO Problem.
Use your preferred method but try to see the link between the 2.
Well done !
