Maths

Today, we are going to continue our learning of multiplication.

Have a look at the In focus question.

My friend says I can multiply 12 by 10 and then by 4 to find the answer. Is this true?

My other friend says I can partition 14 into 10 and 4 and multiply these by 12. Can we solve the problem like this?

Try and solve the problem and see what answers you get. Do you get the same answer both times?

Lets have a look at how we can solve this calculation.

We have partitioned the 12 into 10 and 2 and multiplied 14 by 10 then 14 by 2.

In Q2 – we have solved it again in a similar way. This time we have partitioned 22 into 20 and 2 – Think about place value there are 2 10s and 2 ones.

Have a go yourself now and calculate these two questions using the partitioning method.

Did you get the same answer as me?

1a = 156   1b = 492

Have a go at some more examples – remember to use the same method and partition the second number. Once you have your answers – add them together to get your final answer.

Complete worksheet 12 in your home learning book. Take a picture of your work and email it to your teacher through purple mash. Remember to partition and multiply then add your answers together to get a final answer.  Use your knowledge of multiplying by 10 and 100 in some of the questions.
