In Focus

Let's Learn

Cost of peanuts

To make it easier to work out the total, let’s partition the amounts into pounds and pence.

£1 x 3 = £3

20p x 3 = 60p

6p x 3 = 18p

Now we can add these together:

£3.00

£0.60

+£0.18

 £3.78

Look at the information above and listen to the audio.

Cost for crisps

First work out how much it costs for 6 packets of nuts.

Partition the number:

51p = 50p + 1p

50p x 6 = £3.00 or 300p

1p x 6 =  £ 0.06 or 6p

Add these together

Total =  £3.06 (or 306p)

Next work out how much 3 x packets of crisps are:

£2.09 = £2 and 9p

£2.00x 3 =  £6.00 ( or 600p)

£0.09 x 3 = £0.27 (or 27p)

Add these together:

Total = £6.27 (or 627p)

Now we can add the total cost for the packets of nuts and crisps.

Total Cost for drinks and snacks

£9.33 + £3.78 = £13.11
