Learning Outside the Classroom

At Stoneyholme Primary School, we believe it is vital that we create a broad and balanced curriculum. This includes ensuring that all pupils can experience the world first hand and have the chance to see and take part in high-quality, experiential learning outside the classroom. Our extensive school grounds and local area provide rich opportunities to stimulate learning and promote health and well-being amongst our pupils.

We also believe that a well-planned and facilitated outdoor experience further afield gives children the opportunity to explore their learning in a way that is difficult to reproduce indoors. The outdoors experience can provide a scaffold through which resilience, resourcefulness and teamwork are fostered and one where creativity, curiosity and imagination is encouraged and valued. Many opportunities for LOTC are available to our pupils through subject based trips, the daily enrichment program and visitors to our school. Where possible, we work with local charities to provide meaningful opportunities for our children to develop a sense of fulfilment and make a real difference.

We understand that learning outside the classroom provides opportunities for our children to develop communication and language skills so they can articulate ideas clearly and confidently with functional and disciplinary vocabulary, enabling them to use their 'voice' to take action at a local, national and global level on matters that affect them.

The children explore whole school conceptual questions as they move through school - allowing them to apply new knowledge as they revisit these throughout both key stages. This approach encourages deeper understanding and prepares our pupils for future learning.

What does it mean to be a citizen

Does equality always mean treating everybody the same?

Is power always a positive thing?

Does change always make things better?

Is trade necessary?

Is being part of a community the same for everyone?

Alongside each of these questions, the children at Stoneyholme also use vocabulary including: environment, responsibility, interdependence, climate change and economic well-being.
