Listen carefully

Last week, we identified imperative verbs as a feature of instructional writing. We worked really hard to find them in examples of instructions.

 

Today we are going to use them to create instructions, so let's remind ourselves what they are and their purpose. Click on the picture below.

Instructions

Here is an example of an instruction that has a missing imperative verb:

 

Carefully _______ the smoothie into the glass.

 

Which imperative verb would you chose to make this command make sense?

cut, jump, pour

Well done if you said pour. Carefully pour the smoothie into the glass. 

Carefully is the adverb because it tells you HOW to do something.

Pour is the verb because it tells you WHAT to do.
